"Love me or kill me" Sarah Kane and the theatre of extremes by Graham Saunders

Manchester University Press

Blasted brought Sarah Kane to the theatre pages of the broad-sheets, the front pages of the tabloids, and to the notice of the nation.

Love Me or Kill Me is the first study of Sarah Kane. It covers all of Kane’s major plays and productions, contains formerly unpublished material and reviews, and looks at her continuing influence after her tragic early death. Locating the main dramatic sources and features of her work as well as confirming her place within the "new wave" of emergent British dramatists in the 1990s, Graham Saunders provides an introduction for those familiar and unfamiliar with her work.

A chapter-by-chapter analysis looks at each play, Blasted, Phaedra’s Love, Cleansed, Crave and 4.48 Psychosis and the appendices carry transcripts of interviews with colleagues and leading theatre practionners involved with her productions. Unsing these sources, as well as unpublished interview material with Sarah Kane herself, Love me or kill me presents the most complete study of this foremost British writer.

Graham Saunders is Lecturer in Theater Studies at the University of the West of England.
